Memorandum of John Ross Mahon, land agent, outlining and justifying his management of the Strokestown Estate. Memorandum entitled ‘Memorandum of the Management of the Strokestown Estate since I became Major Mahon’s agent on 20th of November 1846’; outlining in detail the administrative and financial state of the estate in 1846 and the rational behind new policies introduced by him including the assisted emigration scheme of 1847; arguing that the estate was not in order, that the tenantry on the estate was large and ‘completely pauperized’, that ‘rent could not be collected, nor could any system for the amelioration of the condition of the people be introduced’ and that ‘Emigration on an extensive scale was the principal feature of my plan’.
