This exciting new exhibition is to be displayed in Strokestown Park from May 16^th to End of November 2012 entitled ‘More than meets the Eye – the Photographic Glass Plates of Strokestown Park’. It showcases the original glass plates of Strokestown Park.

The collection of the glass plates which date from 1893 – 1919.

The exhibition will run from the 16^th May to the 30^th of November.

Glass Plates where the new technology in the late 19^th Century and revolutionised

Photography, making it much easier to take photograph’s and print them.

There are a number of aspects that are unique about the Strokestown Park collection.

The main photographer is considered to be Henry Pakenham Mahon. Henry was an avid photographer, traveller and gardener. It is believed that it was Henry who was responsible for the initial creation of the pleasure garden in the walled garden during the late 1890’s. The collection of glass plates actually contain some wonderful images taken of the walled garden circa 1900. Images of the estate, family and friends are also present. The collection also shows Henry Pakenham Mahons artistic talents, some may consider aspects of the collection explicit, this is a rare and unique collection depicting a very interesting and elaborate hobby. The original darkroom survives intact in one of the rooms in Strokestown Park along with chemicals, developing equipment, cameras etc. This exhibition is a must see. www.strokestownpark.ie    www.facebook.com/strokestownpark
